Mallory's Story

My name is Mallory and I was diagnosed with T1D in 2001, at the age of six. I was diagnosed while on vacation in California - over 2000km (1242 miles) away from my home. I grew up in the routine of checking my blood sugars, counting carbs and giving myself injections every day. It became second nature for me. I also grew up as a very active child, competing in speed skating and soccer. I was involved with speed skating for 16 years, competing nationally and internationally. My parents were always very supportive and raised me with the attitude that I could achieve anything, even with T1D. Like any diabetic I had my share of ups and downs, but I always knew that diabetes wasn't something that would hold me back from my goals. At the age of 20 I retired from competitive speed skating to focus on my university studies. I'm currently finishing up a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with my sights set on medical school. I'm also now involved with Medtronic, consulting both adults and children on insulin pumps. Diabetes can be extremely frustrating, but I wouldn't change anything about my life. Being a T1D has not only taught me how to be independent from a young age, but has taught me countless other life lessons and enabled me to meet some amazing people over the years!
