Peggy's Story
Hi y'all, I'm Peggy. I just turned twenty-seven and have been diagnosed with T1D for a whopping four years. Being diagnosed later in life was a huge challenge for me until I stopped trying to hide it. I started informing and educating the people around me, and in turn found the most compassion and care I could ever ask for. I embraced and accepted the changes to come, yet I remained true to my adventurous, wild-natured self. Majority of my free time is spent on two wheels, riding motorcycles. A huge concern with riding and being diabetic is always the "what if." On June 9th, 2017 that question became a reality. I had a small mishap. I met some gravel in the roadway while negotiating a curve. The end result? One broken clavicle, two broken wrists, multiple pelvic fractures and two shattered teeth. We all know by now that diabetics are slow to heal and prone to infection, however six weeks post-accident I was back in the saddle. I made a point to push myself harder than ever to stay on top of my blood sugars. Because of my persistence, I continue to roam around on two wheels, living life to the fullest and not letting T1D define me.
