Sean’s Story
Hello T1D Community!
My name is Sean Ryan. I am currently a junior at The Ohio State University studying economics and minoring in city and regional planning. A part from my studies, I am a varsity athlete for the Buckeye’s Mens Volleyball Program.
I was diagnosed when I was 11 years old after catching symptoms early. Like everyone a part of this community, we are all aware that it not the easiest transitions to become so mindful of habits like regulating blood sugars, collecting carb data, and administering 24/7 care for your health. Despite being diagnosed as a juvenile, I am grateful for my tremendously supportive family that assisted me to establish healthy habits that I hold to this day. Their inspiring work and infectious passion have raised donations and awareness for our JDRF team Bean’s Brigade, and more importantly for our T1D community (Fun Fact: Bean was my nickname after being called string bean for my stature, only to have been diagnosed and suddenly gained weight, the nickname upgraded to “Bean”).
Like many, I participated in many sports and activities, including wrestling, lacrosse, football, and band. It wasn’t until seventh grade when I found a new passion for volleyball. Quickly, I became accustomed and discovered this sport as a new pronounced love. I was fortunate enough to be one of 12 players selected to represent the USA Youth National Team in Havana, Cuba my sophomore year of high school. It eventually led to more recognition to play this sport at the next level for The Ohio State.
For the past few years, I have been beyond thankful for the incredible training, coaching, and medical staff that have been by my side through my collegiate career. We have practice and game routines to monitor my blood sugar and physical behavior to maintain my best stature to perform and thrive. For the past few years, I have used the Dexcom G6 and have continued to stay on injections.
I am grateful to tell at least a brief part of my story, but I am happy to be of assistance for anyone who needs advice! Or just needs a friend and not have to talk about diabetes, I am your guy! Go Bucks
