Harrison’s Story

I was exhibiting lethargy, an increased desire for sugary drinks, and weight loss. My dad had been diagnosed just a few years earlier, so the signs were familiar. A finger prick at home reinforced what my family thought and a trip to my pediatrician confirmed that I had Type 1 Diabetes. I spent 3 days at St Louis Children's Hospital, where my family was all educated on my care. I hoped I would handle it well, when the doctor needed to give me his first injection, and i asked if he could do it himself. "I might as well start learning!" From day one, I was an active participant in my health, and was extremely curious about the science behind his care. I was quick to explore how his body reacted to different foods, exercise, sleep, etc. My parents feel lucky that my level of responsibility has only grown with age. I share my diabetic story in classes, clubs, and community organizations as I educates my peers, teachers, and coaches on emergency diabetic care. I teach lessons in science and health classes. I participates in both Civil Air Patrol through our local military base, and Police Explorers with our city's first responders, and in both organizations, I help teach about Dibetics warning signs and care.
