Ron's Story
My story is similar to many other t1d's. I was 21 years old I thought in good health. I started to lose weight and could not seem to stop drinking water. Naturally I also seemed to visit the restroom more than I thought possible. I was diagnosed with diabetes. In 1981 the insulin pump, and other advancements were still thoughts not reality. Thus multiple shots, numerous blood tests and a lack of understanding were the norm. As the research and advancements came along so did my understanding and control. 40 years of being a diabetic has taught me one crucial fact; I am a diabetic, this has to be taken seriously, it is critical to have a team behind you, and a daily control plan. Carbs do not have to be the enemy, but you have to be in control. The real lesson learned is that diabetes is a disease, not a limitation, not an excuse, if you have a dream go for it. The only limitations are those you allow to be placed on you.
