Shawn's Story
Being diagnosed with T1D in November of 2014 was a shock but also a relief. At the prime of my career as a distance runner I'd never imagined being diagnosed with T1D. After cutting my mileage in half due to a niggle that had been bothering me for several months; it was apparent I was very unwell and my poor results and lack of recovery was in fact due to being undiagnosed with T1D. As I was told of my diagnosis I remember thinking this is not going to stop me from running and pushing my limits as a distance runner.
Initially it was scary and the thought of having a low out in the middle of a long run or hard workout plagued my mind for some months. Learning and understanding as much about managing my T1D has been the key in getting back training at a professional level as a distance runner.
T1D is not something you get a break from, it's management requires constant care and consideration.
