Jordan's Story

Hey, my name is Jordan Laiche, I’m 24 years old and have been a type 1 diabetic for just over 6 years now. Since day 1 I’ve had the attitude that I would never let this disease hold me back. The problem was I didn’t fully understand it at first. I tried to fight against it and for the first 5 years I failed. I was playing rugby, hockey and racing bicycles; however, I was doing all of this with very poor blood sugar control and my performance reflected that. So what changed? I started working with diabetes instead of against it. My view is that I can’t ever beat it, so don’t fight it. If I work with it and use it as a tool, I will be more successful. There are still good and bad days and that is ok. It sounds simple, but it is a process. I’ve always been constantly pushing myself and there is still room for improvement, but since I’ve made this mental change, I have been able to accomplish so much more in my life. I am currently playing hockey at the collegiate level, I just finished biking across America with Team Bike Beyond, and I’m looking for the next challenge. I want people to know that they can live beyond type 1 diabetes. I will keep pushing my limits to show the world I can’t be slowed down. Wake up. Kick ass. Repeat. That’s my story.
