Sarah’s Story

It took nearly six years following her T1D diagnosis for Sarah to find the diabetes community. Struggling with issues like burn out and diabulimia, Sarah had a difficult time accepting and managing her diabetes effectively. It was the power of peer support, and connections she found online, that provided the shift in her everyday reality which inspired her to become a PODS leader with the @diabetessisters organization. Since early 2014, Sarah has been leading peer-to-peer support meetups for women living with all types of diabetes in and around Boston. She is also now the chapter founder/leader for @typeonerun Boston, a program of @beyondtype1, and strongly believes that creating a sense of community and connection is key when dealing with a diagnosis like T1D. Additionally, Sarah is a board member for the diabetes and eating disorder non-profit, the @diabulimiahelpline, allowing her to give back to an organization that provided her a great deal of support and education, and will be presenting at the Diabulimia Helpline conference in New Orleans next November. Drawing inspiration from her personal health and wellness journey, Sarah studied integrative nutrition, and became a certified holistic health coach in 2017. She is also a reiki practitioner, believing deeply in the power of alternative healing modalities, and is currently finishing up a 200 hour yoga teacher training program. Forever in love with words, both written and spoken, Sarah blogs about her life with diabetes, and so much more, through her page @whatsarahsaidblog (www.whatsarahsaid.blog), and occasionally works as a freelance writer or guest blogger for various online publications. She hopes to continue to contribute to this community in new and exciting ways as she plans her next adventure and future projects.
