Deaira's story

Backpacking trip.jpg

I was diagnosed with T1D when I was in 7th grade. I was extremely lucky in that my Mom knew very quickly what was going on and took me to the doctor within a couple weeks of early symptoms. From day-one, I was taught to be 100% responsible for my diabetes care. At 12 years old, I was counting my own carbs, taking my own shots and checking in with the school nurse every day. Even though it was very tough at times (especially my teenage years!), and I felt like I had to grow up faster than my friends, I'm so thankful my parents taught me to take charge so young. Now, as an adult, I thrive on doing the things that not only diabetics find difficult, but most people in general! Things like hiking mountains, traveling the world, taking spin classes and moving to new cities all by myself (I've done it four times!), I crave adventure and the freedom to do what I want, whenever I want! Diabetes is certainly a pain, but I make it work for me and I'm learning to embrace it more and more as I get older. I can't wait to see what the future will bring!
