Lauren's Story

At the age of 11, my life changed forever. Over the span of a few months, I dropped more than 20 pounds, drank gallons of water a week, and used the bathroom triple my normal amount. I was tired and irritable, and not the happy 11 year old I once was. I was into cheerleading and gymnastics, hanging out with all my friends, and staying up late watching movies with my family; all of which stopped suddenly.

On May 25th of 2012, my mom surprised my brother and I with a trip to a water park we loved to visit. I put on my one piece bathing suit. My moms jaw dropped when she realized she could see my ribs. She said her heart stopped when she realized just how sick I really was. The next morning I was at the doctors office looking for some answers on what was wrong with me.  Blood was drawn, and many tests were taken. I was diagnosed with Type one diabetes, and was in intense stages of DKA.

I was immediately rushed to the hospital where I stayed in ICU for two days, before being moved to a room for what would be the remainder of a week. As soon as the insulin and treatments began, I was becoming myself again. I left that hospital the happy 11 year old I once was, but with a new lifestyle.

Pricking my finger many times a day, counting carbs and insulin Injections became my new normal. As I got older, I switched to an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor; and began to thrive with my disease.

Currently I am attending Western Carolina University to become a Nurse, and to one day work with other young type one diabetics. Although diabetes can be a burden, it has truly shaped me into the person I am today.
