Jaime’s Story

My t1 story began when I was three years old, I do not remember many of the details, but my parents told me I had all the warning signs. I was very thirsty all the time, going to the bathroom frequently, and my mood had changed; yes, my parents noticed something was not okay, but they were not aware of the Type 1 diabetes early symptoms. My brothers and I have always enjoyed sports; for many years, we played tennis, but once I tried baseball, I fell in love with it.

Currently, I'm a freshman at Florida State University, where I have the opportunity to play for their team. Learning to manage T1 on my own has been a constant learning process; you must plan for lengthy practices, games, traveling, and your class schedule. I try to organize myself as much as possible and control as many variables as possible. Living with diabetes as an athlete can be challenging, but if you have clear goals and are willing to work hard to achieve them, your diabetes won't stop you.
